Millfield is justifiably proud of its purpose built library which is situated in the very heart of the Millfield campus. The library, built to an award-winning design is a large, open plan space on three levels. The provision in the library is outstanding with over 23,000 texts, an extensive collection of multimedia and digital resources on Overdrive; an e-book library offering a range of texts to all year groups.
The library is the focus of independent study at Millfield. Outstanding support is offered to academic departments in delivering the curriculum but the library also employs a Tutor Librarian to promote independent research. The Lower Sixth Research Project and the development of the EPQ qualification have been central to the library’s work in recent years.
Reading both for pleasure and academic study is a fundamental strand of the library’s work and initiatives. In particular the library works closely with the English department and the Year 9 houses to develop reading for pleasure as part of the Nine at Millfield programme. Recommended reading suggestions are available for both Senior and Junior pupils and the library runs its own Book of the Year competition as well as shadowing the national Carnegie book award. The provision of large book boxes for each boarding house has demonstrated the library’s commitment to creating a truly homely atmosphere in the boarding houses, with a wide range of books readily available to the pupils.
The library is noted for its colourful and exciting display work promoting the library's resources, and seeks to offer a modern, innovative facility for all of the Millfield community. A separate silent area has been created for Senior students as well as an area specifically designed for Junior reading. In recent years the library has added new innovations such as hiring a yurt for reading just prior to the Christmas holidays as well as establishing a library tea garden towards the end of the summer term. Students have engaged in a variety of activities from staging a book fair to coincide with World Book Day to a FIFA Playstation tournament to raise money for charity.
