University Destinations

Millfield has a strong track record in supporting students in their decision-making on which university or college is best for them. Our Careers and Higher Education Department is resourced to provide guidance to meet individual aspirations, whatever a student’s ambitions, whether it is Oxbridge, Russell Group, specialist colleges, American or other colleges and international universities.

The summer of 2022 saw 88% of the cohort (283) secure Higher and Further Education places with 12% opting for a gap year or going into employment. This year, 102 of our leavers won places to Russell Group or Times Top 30 universities which are not in the Russell Group, with the top four being Exeter, Durham, Newcastle and Cardiff. Other popular university choices included Loughborough, Oxford Brooks and Bath.

In recent years we have seen a significant increase in the number of applicants from Millfield to overseas universities, in particular USA and Canadian universities. 29 students secured places at USA or Canadian universities and two Old Millfieldian also took up places. A further 10 students secured offers to US universities but declined them. Millfield provides specialist guidance for applications to American universities and employs a Tutor in Charge, a SAT advisor and a Virginian Fellow. They ensure candidates get the best possible advice and are guided throughout the process. Millfield is also one of few SAT centres in the UK which means that pupils do not need to leave the campus to take their SAT entry exam.  The most popular were Stanford, Columbia, Chicago, UCLA, San Francisco, Indiana Bloomington, Amherst and Berklee. Many achieved a mixture of academic and sporting scholarships, including swimming, tennis, golf, hockey and rugby.
