The boarding environment at Millfield encourages students to live their lives to the full in as many spheres as possible, allowing individuality to flourish. The houses are the focal point of students’ lives at school; boarders are highly supportive of each other’s achievements and enjoy going to sports matches, concerts and plays where friends are performing. All of our boarders (around 75% of students) are full boarders so they live at school seven days a week and there is a vibrant weekend programme of activities.

There are 18 boarding houses situated on or within easy reach of the campus, with separate houses allocated for boys and girls and for Year 9. The standard of accommodation is high in all houses, and houses benefit from gardens and spaces for outdoor recreation. All houses have a resident Housemaster or Housemistress (HsM), an Assistant HsM, who also live onsite, and matrons and non-resident tutors who provide boarders with a warm and supportive atmosphere. Boarders also have access to a well-staffed Medical Centre, counselling service and the Spiritual Director.

The houses have excellent facilities including kitchen, common rooms, open-plan living areas and ample spaces for prep work. Bedrooms for students in Lower Sixth are typically shared rooms, made up of two beds; in Upper Sixth students usually have single rooms. Houses are equipped with state of the art Wi-Fi networks, with access to Skype and some social networks. Rooms are inviting and personalised in all areas and the boarders are justifiably proud of their houses.

Boarding houses compete in many events as a house, and are also grouped together in some larger competitive and social events. There is a strong sense of community through the school with major competitions in singing, debating and most major and minor sports.
