Hockey
Hockey at Millfield prides itself on a development philosophy and legacy created by Old Millfieldians, who have represented the school as Olympians. Hockey as a major school participation sport welcomes player of all abilities, giving every student the chance to excel and find their passion. Players train on either of our three water based FIH certified pitches and are coached by a team of three specialist coaches and 20 dedicated academic staff. Specialist hockey staff are highly experienced and qualified coaches within the England Hockey Player Pathway and club hockey setting.
Every individual may access a bespoke programme, whether a NAGs player or a talented multi-sport athlete. Specialised technical one-to-one coaching, athletic development sessions with our full-time strength and conditioning coaches and performance analysis monitoring all contribute to the weekly programme of a hockey player at Millfield.
Players can access two terms of hockey and if deemed the best exposure for the individual, they are able to play club hockey on a Saturday rather than a friendly school block fixture. The high performing players can play National League at clubs such as Team Bath Buccaneers HC, Clifton Robinson’s HC and ISCA HC giving them the opportunity to be challenged. Our cohort of players also have the opportunity to participate in club hockey at a senior or junior level for local community club Mid Somerset HC.
Touring is regarded as a vital component to a pupil’s player and personal development with long and short haul trips taking place on an annual basis.
Club Hockey
The landscape of hockey in England has changed with the emphasis leaning towards club hockey for aspiring young players. With this in mind, we have worked hard to establish links with clubs in the West for which our players can access.
England Player Pathway
We value being a stakeholder in the England Player Pathway and form our schedule alongside the centralised programme constructed by England Hockey. We have players at every level of the pathway, whether it is the Academy Centre hosted at Millfield or the Elite Development Programme where current and recent OMs are involved.
